Mohanlal recommended Ganesh in 'Casinova'. Mohanlal recommended Ganesh in 'Casinova'.
After working with industry veterans like Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Prakash Rai and Sathyaraj early in his career, Ganesh Venkataraman is preparing to team up once again with the award-winning Malayalam actor. In fact, it was Mohanlal who recommended Ganesh for the 'extremely stylised' film, Casanova, after Tamil actor Arya opted out of it. “It’s an honour. Lal’s a great human being,"says Ganesh, who’s off to Dubai in January to start shooting for the film. The actor, who won acclaim for his portrayal of a tough young cop in Unnaipol Oruvan, is certainly expanding his repertoire. He’s just finished shooting for Muriyadi, directed by Selva under the banner of K Balachander. This time, it’s not a cop’s role, but that of a criminal lawyer. “I’m working with senior actor Sathyaraj, who also has a cracker of a role in the film. Since my dad is a lawyer, I got lots of inputs from him to play this role," says Ganesh. His Sandalwood plans, however, are on hold for now. He won't be in Prakash Rai's directorial debut, Naanu Nanna Kanasu, as reported, though he starred in the original, Abhiyum Naanum. “My dates clashed and Prakash understood. He asked me not to worry and wanted me to go ahead and to do the kind of films I'm doing now. But I'll work with him soon," he says. Doesn't he feel relegated to a supporting role when acting with the big guns of the south? "I have so much to learn from them. I’ve seen young heroes who are unable to continue after just one film. I'm yet to build my work profile. If it's a great ensemble cast with a defining role, I don't hesitate taking it up," says the actor. With his female fan base constantly growing, why don’t we see him doing any on-screen romancing? Ganesh says, "When I did Unnaipol Oruvan, I wasn’t prepared to get tagged. But since audiences liked my angry young man portrayal, I’ll try to cater to their expectations. Now, I want to work with the right directors and technicians."
