Pokkiri Raja breaks Twenty20 record !!

Mammootty and Prithviraj’s mass masala entertainer Pokkiri Raja, has created box-office history by collecting a distributors share of Rs 2 crore 21 lakhs in its opening week from 110 screens in India (90 of them are in Kerala). As per trade sources: “Pokkiri Raja has scored at the box-office by beating the collection of Twenty:20, which did Rs 2.03 crore in the first week. The single biggest share is from Kozhikode Apsara (Rs 8.75 lakh), followed by Kavita, Ernakulam (Rs 7.67 lakh). The critics may not like the film, but masses are freaking out on it. Says a theatre owner from Malabar area of the state where the film is doing extraordinary business. Any which way you lookPokkiri Raja, is surely the biggest hit of the year so far.

"Pokkiri Raja" is one of the most awaited movies since the two big stars Mammootty and Prithviraj are coming together with this one. The movie is all set to grace the screens on May 1st, if there is no further problems between theatres and distributors. Meanwhile according to sources, the movie will release in 124 centers. While it will release in 84 centers in Kerala, it will release in 31 centers outside the state. Hot heroine Shriya Saran is making her debut in Malayalam with this one.

Followed by Vettaikaran, Vijay has once again chosen the title of yesteryear MGR film Kavalkaran. The actor reasserts that choosing the yesteryear titles of superstars’ films gains more prominence for his films. As known earlier, Kavalkaran is a remake of Malayalam film Bodyguard (Dileep and Nayantara in lead roles). The film is directed by Siddique and marks the comeback of Asin in Tamil film industry. The first schedule has been shot across the locales of Kumbakonam, Kaaraikudi and Pollachi. According to the buzz, yesteryear actors Raj Kiran and Roja seem to have been signed for this film for enacting the role of Asin’s parents. Followed by the grand success, Ghilli and Kuruvi, music director Vidyasagar has scored music for this Vijay’s film.

GET READY for Vishu 2010 Blockbusters

Vishu is one of the biggest seasons in Malayalam films as it heralds the start of summer and holidays. Vishu 2010 will see four releases: Mohanlal’sAlexander the Great, Dileep’s Pappy Appacha, Kalabhavan Mani’s long delayedPuliman and an unknown, TD Dasan Standard VI. The first off the block will be the Mammas-directed Pappy Appacha, which will release in 80 screens on April 14. It features Innocent and Dileep as an illiterate father and son duo who own everything in a village from the school to the hospital, theatre and the local bar. There is stiff resistance from a school teacher, played by Kavya Madhavan, against their domination, which leads to a comic twist and more fun. On Vishu (April 15), Mohanlal’s Murali Nagavally-directed Alexander the Greatis scheduled to release in nearly 85 screens. It is said to be a typical masala entertainer with a great twist. However, trade people haven’t confirmed its release yet, and the film is yet to be certified by the censors. Anil K Nair’s debut film Puliman, featuring Kalabhavan Mani and Meera Nandan, is also scheduled for release on April 15. The other Vishu release isTD Dasn Standard VI. Mammootty in Kannada opposite Konkana

Superstar Mammootty is all set to make his debut in Kannada. The movies titled Shikari. He plays double role in the film, the first one as a software techie and the second as a freedom fighter.. Big budget film producer Gandugali K Manju has been successful in bringing the Malayalam actor to Kannada films. Speculations about Mammootty's entry into Kannada films have been on in Sandalwood for the last six months. Now, they have turned true with Mammootty giving his nod for Shikari. Manju has selected award-winning young director Abhay Simha for the project. Simha, who hails from coastal Karnataka, is known for his grip over filmmaking. He is an ardent fan of the actor and is very much excited and is looking forward to his project.The selection of the remaining star cast is on. Abhay is planning to cast Bollywood actress Konkana Sen Sharma as the leading lady in the film.Manju wants Shikari to be a closely guarded secret as it is supposed to be a surprise package. Abhay Simha is a product of FTII who believes in good cinema that is entertaining and sensible. He shot to fame after the 45-minute documentary on the psychology of twins, triplets and quadruplets. He has 19 documentaries, 10 short films and two music videos to his credit. By the time Producer K. Manju says the superstar will write the dialogues for the Malayalam version of the film. The Kannada version is titled “Shikari”, but the title for Malayalam version has not yet been finalised.“He was so impressed with the script that he offered to write the dialogues of the film himself. We were excited when he accepted the responsibility of writing the dialogues. His book ‘Kazchapadu’, a collection of essays in Malayalam, has been widely appreciated,” said Manju. Earlier, another Malayalam superstar Mohanlal had acted in Love, the debut film of Aditya Singh, son of renowned film-maker Rajendra Singh (Babu). But the movie was a disaster. Since then, Mohanlal has not been seen in any Kannada movie.

Its being said that Mammootty has taken an extra bit of interest in the film, the script of which has impressed him thoroughly. It might come as a surprise to atleast some of us, that the film would be scripted by P Sreekumar. Earlier it was rumoured that M T Vasudevan Nair might be writing the script for this film as well. Its heard that Gokulam Gopalan and Hariharan plan to recreate the Pazhassi Raja magic yet again, and create a landmark in Malayalam cinema through 'Karnan'. If rumors that are pouring in are to be believed, 'Karnan' might turn out to be the costliest film to be produced in Malayalam, with a budget of about 30 crores.

Arun Vijay instead of Surya in Kandahar?

Arun Vijay, son of reputed character actor Vijay Kumar, will reportedly replace Suriya in Major Ravi's upcoming Tamil-Malayalam bilingual Kandahar (also starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan). Surya was chosen to play the role of a commando in the film but had to opt out due to unavailability of dates. It is also reported that Naadodigal girl Ananya has a role in this film. Amitabh will be seen as the father of a passenger on the ill-fated plane that was hijacked and Mohanlal will play a commando chief. Produced by Mohanlal's own Pranavam Arts, the film is inspired by the hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814 in 1999. It was hijacked by five Pakistani militants while on its way from Kathmandu to New Delhi on Christmas Eve and was forced to land in three different airports (Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai) before spending a week on the tarmac in Kandahar with 186 hostages on board. Kandahar will be shot in Delhi, Nepal and Kerala.

A dozen of movies going to release !

With the number of movies that are expected to be released this season, the fight for screens is likely going to take place. Sources indicate that at least about a dozen movies are likely to be released. Prithviraj starrer "Thanthonny" is already doing the rounds today friday with his brother Indrajith's Nayakan. Then we have "In Ghost House Inn" on 25th, Mammootty starrer "Pramaani" on 26th, Mohanlal-SureshGopi starrer Janakan on April3rd and Siddiue's AprilFool on April 1st. With all the movies already having a popular cast, we have to wait and see what steps the filmmakers take for a proper distribution.

"4 Idiots" on discussion !

Well, looks like Mollywood is taking a leaf out of Bollywood super hit "3 Idiots". According to sources, there are plans to make a similar movie titled "4 Idiots" in Malayalam. This one is likely to be directed by KM Pradheesh who is making his directorial debut. It will star Mukesh, Siddhique, Jagathy and Suraj in the lead. The shooting is scheduled to start this week and completed in 30 days but the heroines have not been decided as yet.

The Best Actress award went to Sandra Bullock for her role in "The Blind Side".
Despite "Avatar" having nine nominations, they only earned three awards: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

"Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire": Mo'Nique won for Best Supporting Actress, and the film won for Best Adapted Screenplay. And "Up" has taken home two as well: One for Best Animated Feature and another for Best Original Score.

Critic Sukumar Azhikode on Thursday urged the State Government to conduct a public inquiry into the activities of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). Addressing a meet-the-press programme here on Friday, he said the inquiry commission should look into the corruption and other unhealthy activities of AMMA and cine artists. “A change in the leadership of AMMA is necessary for the healthy growth of Malayalam film industry,” he said. He said actor Mohanlal misused the Colonel status in the Territorial Army by posing in uniform for the advertisement of Malabar Gold in national dailies on August 15, 2009. He said that the decision of Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit, Kalady, to confer the D Litt title on Mohanlal was unwarranted.

The controversy over a ban imposed by the Malayalam film industry on veteran actor Thilakan took a new turn yesterday with superstar Mohanlal crossing swords with leading literary critic and orator Sukumar Azhikode. Azhikode, a supporter of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) claimed Mohanlal had called him seeking his mediation to end the row. But Mohanlal denied the claim saying it was a mere hallucination of the 83-year-old social critic. Azhikode, who has accused top actors of ruining the industry by overcharging and not letting talented actors like Thilakan their right to pursue their career, said Mohanlal had called him from Dubai and requested his mediation to end the stalemate. Speaking to reporters in Thrissur yesterday, Azhikode said he had also called Thilakan and both sides had accepted his offer to mediate and bring them around a table. The date and venue had to be decided. Mohanlal reacted sharply and dubbed Azhikode s remarks as a joke by an elderly man. Everybody knows that he has little idea about the industry and there is no point in talking to this person. I was very much here shooting a Malayalam film when I rang him up to tell him to spare me and don t try to bully me, Mohanlal said. Then he said I should take the initiative to patch up with Thilakan and I told him ours is a professional body and it has the competence to address such issues. The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes and the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), of which all leading directors and technicians are members, had decided not to co-operate with Thilakan unless he withdrew derogatory statements he allegedly made against them and apologise. If Thilakan wants to continue in AMMA, or any other organisation, he should talk to its officials and solve the issues. The person called Azhikode has nothing to do with the industry and his claim is absurd, Mohanlal said. Azhikode had lashed out at Mohanlal and said his love scenes in movies had become unpalatable. He also repeatedly criticised the actor for endorsing jewellery firms and found fault with him defending Mammootty, whom he accused of demanding Rs65mn for a film. I told him to leave me alone. Even Amitabh Bachchan endorses commercial products, Mohanlal said. Eminent writer T Padmanabhan criticised Azhikode saying he was suffering from an inferiority complex and hence jealous at beautiful people like Mohanlal and Mammootty. Who invited him to mediate between the stars? He doesn t even watch movies, Padmanabhan said. Director Satyan Anthikkad and actor Mamukkoya also opposed Azhikode s intervention . Sukumar Azhikode getting involved in the Thilakan controversy seems to have heated up the affairs quite a bit. Azhikode had recently heavily come down on the superstars, when he said that Mammootty had got a remuneration of five and a half crores for acting in 'Pazhassi Raja', and that Mohanlal was selling off his recognition by appearing in jewelery ads. Director Ranjith, who has never minced words when expressing an opinion has retaliated with equal strength towards Azhikode's comments. While interacting with a popular online medium, he stated that Azhikode's accusations against Mammootty are baseless, and that he should get his facts right before he blurts out such statements. Ranjith rose in defense of Mammootty when he said that he personally had an experience as to how accommodating Mammootty was, when he agreed to do the critically acclaimed 'Palery Manickyam' for a very moderate fee, especially since the actor was convinced of its scope. Azhikode should not speak of crores merely based on hearsay. He should also reveal the source of his infrmation. Ranjith went on to say that he was willing to take back his comments if either Gokulam Gopalan or Hariharan affirmed that Mammootty had claimed a high remuneration for 'Pazhassi Raja'. Renjith also said that he didn't understand the logic behind accusing Mammootty of throwing Thilakan out of 'Christian Brothers'. This was after all a Mohanlal film that was being directed by Joshey. Azhikode was merely backing the statements that Thilakan had been issuing, without realizing what the truth is. Azhikode, who is a great orator, goes to speak after demanding a fee. Mohanlal and Mammootty do the same for the job that they do; that is acting. There is no use of being jealous about it, Renjith said.

Mohanlal, while interacting with a prominent daily yesterday said that Megastar Mammootty's silence in the Thilakan issue should not be mistaken as cowardice. Mammootty is maintaining a silence merely because of the respect that the industry has towards Thilakan as a senior actor. The delegates of the South Indian History Congress were in for a big surprise, when they found a researcher having done a study on an unlikely 'subject'. Mohammed Fakrudeen Ali, a post graduate student in History at the University of Kerala, came up with a study on the influence of Superstar Mohanlal on the cultural and historical scenario of the state during the last twenty five years. Mohanlal in 'Manjil Virinja Pookkal' depicts the Hippy culture of the 90's. He followed it up with several other films in which he played the jobless youngster. In films like 'Abhimanyu' and 'Nadodikattu' he has played the man who migrates from the village to the city. Fakrudeen feels that even as Mohanlal plays a character, he does maintain an identity of his own in every film. This is quite different from the way in which the other actors. Fakrudeen's study was much discussed in the conference.

Ban in screening of Yugapurushan.

The SC/ST Aikyavedi has demanded that the screening rights of the movie ‘Yugapurushan’ be cancelled as according to the organisation the film portrays social reformer and leader of the SC/ST Ayyankali in a bad light. At a press conference here on Tuesday, the Aikyavedi office-bearers demanded that the screening of the film be stopped immediately and that the producers of the movie apologised for the allegedly demeaning Ayyankali. The Aikyavedi said there were several scenes in the film in which Sree Narayana Guru had been eulogised for bringing about many social reforms, many of which were actually brought about by Ayyankali. It claimed that while both Sree Narayana Guru and Ayyankali were friends and contemporaries, the Guru had been portrayed as the teacher of Ayyankali. They said they had no dispute about the greatness of Sree Narayana Guru but that their objection was to portraying Ayyankali as a henchman of the Guru. The film did not give due credit to Ayyankali as a great social reformer and while extolling the Guru as a ‘Yugapurushan,’ was humiliating Ayyankali, they claimed.

Telugu star Allu Arjun, a rank outsider to Malayalam cinema, has taken Kerala by storm with the release of the dubbed version of his Arya 2. The film, which released in 65 screens last Friday, has grossed a whopping Rs 67 lakhs in three days! Says a leading exhibitor in Kerala, “The film has taken an M & M (Mammootty & Mohanlal) kind of opening and is running to packed houses even in smaller centres. To be frank, our young heroes never enjoy this kind of an opening!” With the success of the film, Allu Arjun — popularly known as Bunny — has become a youth icon in Kerala. In fact, a market survey states that he is way ahead, in terms of popularity, than other young Malayali actors like Prithviraj and Jayasuriya. The stylish star’s earlier Telugu films like Arya, Happy, Desamuduru and Parugu have all been dubbed into Malayalam and turned out to be huge hits. It was his films that started the trend of Telugu mass commercial films being dubbed into Malayalam. The rights of Arya 2, which were purchased for Rs 1.05 crore, is expected to take a distributor’s share close to Rs 2 crore in Kerala. Allu’s next release Varudu, in which Tamil actor Arya plays villain, is reported to have been sold for Rs 1.5 crore! Meanwhile, Tamil actor Ajith’s Aasal, which also released worldwide last Friday, could not release in the Malabar and Travancore areas, as theatres there preferred to screen Arya 2 instead. Says Ravi, the distributor of Arya 2, who also regularly distributes Tamil films, “Today, among other language actors, Allu Arjun comes second only to Ilaiyathalapathi Vijay in terms of popularity, in Kerala.” Recently, Bunny was in Thiruvananthapuram to participate in a television channel’s award ceremony. He was mobbed by his fans who lovingly call him ‘Mallu Arjun’. Today, Allu has as many hoardings as any other big Malayalam star. So, what is it about Bunny that has made him such a rage among youngsters? Says Ravi, “He dances like a dream and all his movies have a romantic touch. Also, he has a Malayali look that gets the girls swooning. His core strength lies in his fan following among the youth, which identifies with him. No other young actor has managed to do this till date.” Allu, who now has several fan clubs, is planning to tour the state and interact with his fans. His forthcoming movie Varudu, currently in production, was shot in Kochi and Palakkad. M & M will have to rethink their strategies on how to cope with the threat that’s being posed by ‘Mallu’ Arjun, who has been crowned by trade pundits as the new ‘Prince of the Kerala box office’.

It seems to be raining sequels in Kerala. The latest to join the bandwagon is the immensely popular film 'Sandesham', that was directed by Sathyan Anthikkad and which was released in 1991. Almost twenty years after the film was released, Sreenivasan and Sathyan Anthikkad would be joining hands for a sequel. Jayaram and Sreenivasan would appear again in the sequel as KRP and Kottappalli in this political satire. With the highly transformed political scenario in the state, the sequel would in all possibility have an extremely interesting tale to tell. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) denied that it had issued any directive against Malayalam actor Thilakan, saying that the actor was trying to "politicise and divide film industry on caste lines". FEFKA General Secretary B Unnikrishnan told reporters here that he was prepared to resign if Thilakan's allegation that he was removed from Mohanlal starrer 'Christian Brothers', following "pressures" from the organisation, was proved right. Thilakan had earlier said that FEFKA, an association of film directors and technicians and AMMA (Association of Malayalam movie artistes) were functioning as "mafia gangs" to protect the narrow interests of a chosen few. The actor alleged that the organisations had issued directives to everyone against offering him any roles. "This was not right. There is no ban against Thilakan," Unnikrishnan said, adding, the issue would be discussed at the FEFKA meeting on February 17.

A group of youngsters who said they were supporters of Thilakan, arrived at Kalappurakkal House near Idakochi where the shoot of 'Christian Brothers' was going on, and tried to enter the shooting site. According to sources Boney Kapoor saw a Malayalam film ‘Bodyguard’ in Ernakulam and has been in awe of it. It is also believed that Kapoor had a meeting with Johnny Sagarika, producer of ‘Bodyguard’. Buzz is that Boney is planning to rope in Prabhu Deva yet again to direct this film with Salman Khan in the title role. When asked, Boney Kapoor confirmed saying, “Yes I went to Ernakulam during my visit to Chennai and saw ‘Bodyguard’ as Prabhu recommended it. It’s a good film but I didn’t go with an intention to buy its rights. Its director Siddhique is quite known and has made a lot of good films. Priyadarshan has remade most his films in Hindi.” Boney ensures that he will be soon working with Salman and Prabhu Dheva. “I’ll be working with them but if you ask me particularly about ‘Bodyguard’, I am not sure as I am yet to decide about its Hindi remake.” It can be recalled that Tamil actor Vijay also approached its makers to remake ‘Bodyguard’ in Tamil.

The shooting of "Pramaani" is going at fast pace and about 50% of the shooting is already completed. The recent schedule took place in Ernakulam. This one being directed by B Unnikrishnan stars Mammootty and Sneha in the lead. After "Thachiledathu Chundan" which released about 12 years back, Mammootty will be seen speaking the Kuttanad slang in this one. He will be playing the role of a Panchayat President, Viswanath Panikkar.

Megastar Mammootty was recently honoured with the doctorate degree. Speaking about this new honor, the actor recalled that his father advised him to opt for the science group during his school days so that he could take up medicine as a profession. However, fate had something else in store for Mammootty and the dream was never realized. The actor, during his acceptance speech at the university, said that his father’s wish had come true today and he dedicated the doctorate in honor of his late father.

Now Jayaram is back with a family character through the movie "Kudumbasree Travels". As the title suggests, the movie is entirely a family oriented film. Jayaram plays the role of a bus owner in the film, a kinda role played by Mohanlal in Varavelppu. The movie is directed by a debutant Kiran. But the director says that the movie beards a different story from that of Varavelppu.
